Bad Breeds or Bad Owners?

Recommended Posts

We keep hearing things like "No such thing as a bad breed only bad owners" and now another child has been killed in Cornwall this fire has been stoked once more.

I have seen many family friendly Rottweilers and Staffies etc. but there is clear statistical evidence that these dogs DO bite more often and with more serious consequences than other breeds. What is the answer to this? Do we need a dog training test similar to the driving test?

Im not sure there is an answer but I personally feel some breeds seem to have it in their genetics, I feel that this mixed with a bad owner only leads to big problems 😢

Such tragic news about the child and my heart goes out to the family but a few things do not add up,why would anyone leave a child alone? And with a dog? And more so a dog that had previously bitten.

A tragedy indeed. I think it's a combination of the two like you say. A dog with the genetics can be properly socialised but all too often dogs are left unsocialised after the puppy novelty wears off. A dog handling test (perhaps instead of breed bans) would be sensible imo but whether or not that is likely or practical is another matter. Regardless of breed, all dog guardians and family members need to be aware of how to recognise the signs of escalating aggression but some need to be aware of this more than others.

We recently published an article on understanding dog behaviours and worryingly most children cannot recognise the warning signs dogs give before a bite.

I don't have any answers but it's awful news to hear.

Obviously bad owners but you get bad people who like to torment dogs too .Very sad to hear another child killed .

A good point. We often forget the dog can’t tell their side of the story.

There are more tips on this published by the RSPCA after hospital admission figures for dog bites have risen again.
